Youth Imperative Center

The Youth Imperative Center in Bozeman, MT is a place for kids to learn about law and social services in the area. The non-provit YIC is set up not only to educate, but also to help those in trouble with the law, providing several different services under one roof. In this project, founder Brock Albin had renovated a house downtown into his offices, but wanted to add an outdoor space for gathering and meeting. The idea of this porch was not only to be a setting for informal meetings and activities, but also to provide an entry which better addressed the corner lot and welcomed people to the Center. Because this house is in an historical overlay district, it was important to design an appropriate porch for the context of the neighborhood. Providing the City with presentation drawings and getting involved with them early helped this project get through the Design Review Board without any problems, even with a variance to encroach on setbacks to accomodate the larger size of the porch.
